Why is my refrigerator not cooling?

You open the fridge, the light comes on, but the milk feels warmer than it should. A fridge can have power and still fail to keep food cold: cooling may be switched off, cold air may not be reaching the food, or the appliance may be struggling to maintain its temperature. The useful clue is how the warmth appeared—suddenly, after a change, or in just one compartment. [1–3, 5–6]

Why the light can work while the fridge stays warm

The light is reassuring, but it answers only part of the question. It shows that the light has power; it does not tell you whether the cooling system is operating.

There is a particularly clear example in Samsung's guidance for its RF25 series: in Cooling Off mode, the lights and fan still work while the compressors stay off. This lets a store display an apparently working refrigerator without keeping it cold. At home, the same mode would leave both compartments warm. 6

That is one possible explanation, especially for a newly installed appliance—not a diagnosis of every lit-up, warm fridge. If the display shows an unfamiliar message, compare it with your model's manual before trying a button sequence. Different controls can make a similar-looking panel behave differently.

Why the freezer can be cold while the fridge is warm

It seems contradictory: the frozen food is still frozen, yet the milk is warm. But on a refrigerator with a single evaporation system, the two compartments share a route for cold air. Air travels from the freezer into the fresh-food compartment through vents, then returns. If food blocks that route, the freezer being cold does not guarantee that enough cold air reaches the refrigerator shelves. 5 3

This makes the position of a package surprisingly relevant. A container covering a vent can interfere with circulation even though it fits neatly on the shelf. Look for covered openings and give them room; you do not need to remove a panel to notice an obstruction. 3

The shared-air explanation has a limit. Some designs circulate air separately in each compartment. A cold freezer is a useful detail to report, but it cannot identify a failed fan or prove that every refrigerator has the same airflow arrangement. 5

Why it can feel warmer after a grocery run

A temperature change after putting away groceries has a different context from unexplained warming overnight. Adding a large amount of food, leaving the doors open, or losing power can temporarily raise the temperature. Cooling back down takes time. 2

A newly installed fridge has its own starting point, too. Whirlpool says a new installation can take 24 hours to cool completely. That describes initial cooling; it is not a reason to ignore an established refrigerator that has suddenly stopped keeping food cold. 2

Think about the sequence: what changed, when did the warmth begin, and is the measured temperature coming back down? Keep food safe separately—an appliance's recovery time is not a safe-storage allowance.

A door can look closed without keeping warm air out

Sometimes the explanation is at the front of the fridge. A projecting container or badly positioned shelf can prevent the door from closing fully. Warm air then enters, reducing cooling and sometimes leaving condensation inside. That combination—unexpected moisture and a door obstructed by its contents—is a reason to look at closure. 3

The flexible seal around the door also matters. Dirt or damage can stop it sealing properly and let cold air escape. Check the visible seal and whether the contents interfere with closing. Persistent poor sealing needs attention; turning the temperature down does not explain why the door is leaking air. 1

Why a running sound does not settle the question

Hearing the fridge run tells you that something is operating, but temperature tells you whether food is staying cold. Some modern high-efficiency compressors normally run for long periods at changing speeds. A long run alone does not establish a fault. 2

Continued warmth is a different concern. Internal fans, the compressor or other components can require professional attention, but the sound and warm compartment do not tell you which part is responsible. If settings, unobstructed vents and door closure do not explain the problem, arrange service rather than guessing at a replacement part. Repeated circuit-breaker trips also warrant professional attention. 1

When to get help—and what to tell support

A useful description is specific: “The freezer is still cold, the refrigerator is warm, and it started yesterday.” Add measured temperatures, any display message and a recent outage or installation if relevant. This gives support a clearer starting point than “it isn't working.”

Use your manufacturer's support service when poor cooling persists after the normal checks in your manual. Keep your own checks to accessible controls, food placement and door closure. Internal electrical and cooling-system work belongs with a qualified technician. 1

What about the food already inside?

The food question cannot wait for an exact appliance diagnosis. An appliance thermometer helps establish whether the refrigerator is at or below 40°F (4°C). The smell of the milk or the feel of a shelf cannot establish that everything has been stored safely. 4

If the temperature has been too high, the food's time and temperature history matter. Use the FDA's guidance for the situation, including its separate power-outage advice. When you cannot establish safe storage, do not use tasting as a test. 4

One last question: should I turn it colder?

A setting that is too warm can explain insufficient cooling. Check it against your manual, then measure the actual temperature. If the compartment stays warm, choosing a colder setting does not identify the cause. 1 4
